My daughter has now been in preschool for around 3 months so you could consider this our three month update. I was so hopeful in the beginning, she was coming home with cute crafts, a few weeks she came home with the weekly paper with what they were supposed to be learning, etc. She would come home talking about books they read. It was going to be a great preschool. About a month in, this all started to disolve.

Three Month Preschool Update:

I got two weekly papers telling me what she was supposed to be learning and then the week before Christmas I got a third weekly paper. This one said they were reviewing the things they had learned. Letters A through L (both upper and lower case) as well as the numbers 1 through 10. WOW. She did not know this stuff. She did not have any papers come home with any kind of tracing, glueing, crafting, etc with any of these things. There were no photos on the class website of any of this occurring. When I was quizzing my daughter and we did a small home-school session to see if she knew some of these things, for the most part she did not. She knew the letters in her name and other letters like mom, nan, and papapa (which is how she spells it). It is disappointing to say the very least. The curriculum fee was $100 per student, not only that but this school also had a sign up fee, they do monthly fundraisers for activities in the classrooms. They have a lot of money pumping into these classrooms. The weekly fee is over $100.

My View of the Preschool:

Currently every time I drop in to pick her up, and I have insured now that I am on break to drop in at a variety of times they are ALWAYS watching movies. ALWAYS. Over the past month I have dropped by that school at 8 am, 9 am, 9:30 am, 10:00 am, 11:45 am, 12:15 pm, 12:30 pm, 2:30 pm, 2:14 pm, 3:00 pm, 3:30 pm. In the beginning, maybe for about the first month or so some of the time when I would just drop by she would actually be doing work or something. I’ll admit a lot of times the lessons where probably going over these four year old’s heads (for numbers it was adding and subtracting coins and oranges, not just focusing on the numbers themselves. Now they are just watching movies.

You should Casually Drop by a New facility your child is staying at: Here’s how!

How have I dropped in at THAT many times you might be wondering. Well, I am a very “forgetful mama” and since this is a new place that she has never been and I don’t know anyone there, I would Forget her water bottle and bring it 20 minutes to an hour after dropping her. Further more, this past month or so especially since I figured out they were just watching movies I started dropping her off at different times in the morning to see what they were doing. I had a couple other things that I would forget without mentioning it when I dropped her off and then just show back up 20 minutes to an hour later with them, unexpected. If your work allows you (or your classes) allow you to do this when your child is having to go to a new place then by all means do it. Since Starting though I have gone a field trip, brought lunch and snacks for the kids, and some other stuff in an effort to get to know the teacher. So, water bottles, lunches, blankets, etc are all good things to casually forget.

Integrating Home School Preschool Back into our Routine:

I decided to integrate home school preschool back into our routine more regularly over the week of Christmas. So here are some of the things we did with out home program. I am hoping to have her fully ready for school come August. Today, I’m going to talk about some of the things we have been doing.

We have this Dry Erase Board book from Amazon which we have been working with a lot, you will see it refereed to throughout our lessons! I have a tendency to hand write my letters a little weird, but by referring to this book when teaching my daughter her letters she is learning the “correct way” to write them!

Today’s Preschool Took a LONG LONG time. The activities were just lenghty.

  • The first activity we did was to use the new letter board I got for Christmas and lay out all the Alphabet on it. We pain staking-ly searched (letter recognition) for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet. We also sang the abc’s as we went along.
  • Next, we were very letter focused today and watched the entire Blippi alphabet video as my daughter wrote each letter that came on our TV.
  • We also watched the Blippi Number Video as a bonus!
  • Lastly we practiced the numbers 1-10 again in our dry erase book!

If you are a girl mom, then you might also be interested in incorporating some bonding activities into you routine! These could range from mother-daughter dates to completing a bucket-list. Remember that you should be making preschool fun, not just all about the worksheets and educational videos! Be sure to check out the special Mother-Daughter Activity book as a way to incorporate mother-daughter bonding into your preschool program! Get your copy here!

Any time we do preschool or are starting a preschool program back up I start writing it all down in my phone to try not to repeat the same lessons over and over again. It helps me keep track of it! This might be a good Idea for you. If you are stuck on what to teach or do one day for preschool then just grab one of the lessons off this page!

Enjoy the New Year!

  1. I had already planned on doing preschool at home and reading this just confirmed I’m making the right decision. At this young age learning should be fun! So many great ideas I will have to come back to when that time comes.

    1. Yea, while I love the socialization that preschool gives my daughter, it is disappointing that she doesn’t learn very many things to get her prepared for kindergarten.
