We are now well past July, and I had wanted to post so many great summer homeschool posts…and I didn’t. So, today I figured I’d hop on the blog and give you all a summer homeschool update!

For our summer homeschool we have been doing it more like “playing school” of sorts than an actual hard core routine…I mean it is summer so why not right?

The class room set up!

We have a dry erase board and markers (we are down to pink and green at this point…need to go school shopping!) I love pulling this out and setting it up on our couch. This gives me a place to sit while I teach. We pull out three of my daughter’s little chairs and set them in circle around the couch. Then my daughter and some of her stuffed animals or dolls sit in them. You can shop our favorite dry erase board on amazon here:

Summer Homeschool content:

On one side of the board I write everything down that we want to accomplish for our class day. This keeps me in line. Our class takes about an hour. My daughter actually stays pretty focused in this time frame. You may have to adjust this frame for older you younger kids (my daughter is 4).

We usually start out with something fun to kinda help my daughter get into the preschool routine…this could be the ABC song or show and tell. (Yes we do show and tell in homeschool preschool.)

Next we move into something a little more meaty like letter writing or recognition practice. To further focus on the alphabet we sometimes do a very simple scavenger hunt! I will dig out a basket or box and have my daughter go around the house filling it with something that starts with the letter we are focusing on. I also really like reading Dr. Sues’s ABCs to help my daughter remember her letters.

For colors we sort bouncy balls or marbles into piles based on color. We might also color some pictures dealing with certain colors or cut out colored construction paper.

For things like history, or science fun facts we have a couple go to YouTube channels that we like to check out! We love Homeschool Pop for their animal facts videos. Another great YouTube channel is SciShow Kids for some of their quality science information.

We also do things like counting, nursery rhymes, and learning a bit about history. For these we either do videos…or I just teach the history courses. I was a bit of a history buff back in the day!
