As a mom in college the semester gets to be so stressful. I always bite off more than I can chew with classes, two jobs, and trying to raise a child. To add to it I’m supposed to be home schooling my child. This semester we were lucky if we got through two to three worksheets or small activities per week. They were nothing elaborate and ranged from coloring to a worksheet on my tablet. All of the stress of the semester simply piles up and I end up absolutely hating my life. I have to say when you have so much going, if you have another root besides home school I would recommend it. Alas, we really don’t right now, so we shall forge on.
What we hope to accomplish:
Now that summer is here things tend to get better. I am a little less busy, so we can focus on preschool a little more. This summer I am hoping for us to do three to five hours per week of preschool. I have made up a really fun schedule and yesterday we completed our first hour. So, I figured I’d hop on the blog and tell y’all about it.
I wanted to keep the preschool to an hour so that it held my daughter’s attention and didn’t get too boring. For our one-hour session we follow a simple guide line of hard learning, fun, hard learning, fun, hard learning. If you can really call it hard learning. It is more of just things that my daughter must sit still for that aren’t “play.” That’s probably the hardest part of the whole process, my daughter doesn’t really want to do her preschool. She would rather be watching her shows, playing games, or building her forts.
Home School During Summer Routine:
Let me jump in and elaborate a little on this routine. I decided that I wanted to start out our routine with something biblical. This summer I am hoping to read through the book The Story, which is a chronological study of the bible. So, for around 8 to 10 minutes at the start of preschool we read some of this then say a little prayer. Next, we move on to science. This is more of the fun part where we do fun experiments, play with sensory things, and watch a fun science video on YouTube. I’ve linked a couple YouTube channels with educational preschool videos in the resources. I just pick a science video from one of them. Science lasts about 10 to 15 minutes. Next is English, which is where we learn about letters or song, or something pertaining to English. Rhyming for instance would be a good thing to cover during this time. We started out yesterday with something light and fun and watch the this old man song video on YouTube. Then we practiced writing letters on a dry erase board.
Extra “fun” stuff to teach the kids!
The next area of learning is what is known as the extra stuff. Each day of the week I planned to do a extra lesson like music, history, or art. Something a small child doesn’t need reinforced every day, but might make the program more fun. Yesterday was history day and I decided to start with Columbus and hopefully work our way up as far as we can get this summer. We covered things like the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria, how Columbus was sent by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and thought he was traveling to the indies but really ended up in America. And of course, the iconic year of 1492, you know when he actually sailed the ocean blue. For this lesson we drew out the pictures of the continents the boats, and how they went across the ocean. I made it more like an interactive story. Lastly, we finish up with a little bit of math. In our case a little bit of math is counting, learning what the number actually look like, you know beginner stuff.
Home School During Summer Supplies:
Be sure to load up this summer on your preschool supplies! Summer preschool looks a little different than a regular preschool routine so you might need some fun items! I mentioned how we used our dry erase board earlier in the post. I also linked The Story here as well, It is such a great book, basically an easy to read bible!
