Yes, Yes, Yes, it’s been a few weeks since we’ve shaken things up with our preschool program. I’ve been working on pulling together a few weeks of “fun” lesson plans that I can hopefully air next Friday! This week we did something we’ve never tried before. DIY crayons!!!

DIY Crayon Experience:

It was a bit tedious in the beginning but my daughter was so excited when we were finally able to pop them out of the mold. She wanted to make more right away. I had looked through a lot of sites to see how to make them and eventually decided to do them using the below steps! You can purchase your crayons in bulk from amazon here!

How to make your own crayons:

Step 1:

We started out by getting out a bunch of crayons and hand pealing them. This I definitely wouldn’t recommend. Most sites said use and exacto knife to cut off the wrappers but I was wanting my daughter to be able to help so we picked away at those suckers for an hour! We would put them into the mould as we went.

Step 2:

We baked them on 200 degrees for 20 minutes. I put the Wilton mold on a cookie sheet just so it wouldn’t bend and spill hot was on me whenever I took it out. This was a great idea and I’d definitely recommend it. It worked great. I had read warnings about the smell the melting crayons would give off but It really wasn’t that intrusive. We used crayons from the 48 count Crayola crayon boxes in case you need to know the brand.

Step 3:

We let them cool for over an hour, it took awhile but they finally hardened. As we were removing them from the mould my daughter thought they sounded like we were ripping tape off something. Which they really did.

The Final Result: DIY Crayons

The star shaped crayons stack up really cute, but they don’t color well with the side that was exposed to the oven. You might be interested in this super simple apple preschool lesson as a way of using the new crayons!

Anyway that’s our review of the crayon making process, it was definitely a fun preschool activities, and will make for some fun coloring activities!! Let me know in the comments below if you have ever tried to to make your own crayons! DIY Crayons for the win!
