The back-to-school season is the perfect time to stock up on everything your kids need for their new school year—and there’s no better place to shop than Amazon on Prime Day which is Tuesday, July 12, and Wednesday, July 13, 2022. But if you don’t have Amazon prime or are missing this online shopping experience, the next best bet for saving money on your kid’s school supplies is a state-wide tax-free weekend. Not every state offers tax-free weekends, but if yours does you are in luck. Continue on to learn about the tax-free weekends by state.

What is the 2022 Tax-Free Weekend?

A tax-free weekend happens when some states exempt certain items from sales tax, allowing you to save money on your purchases. It’s a great opportunity to purchase school supplies, clothes, and other items for the upcoming school year without paying extra. Homeschooling can be expensive so any sort of savings helps.

But remember, after tax-free weekends, school supplies can be very picked over. So, if you cannot make it to your tax-free weekend, then plan on picking up your school supplies before it.

Alabama

Alabama’s tax-free weekend is July 15–17, 2022.

It’s a great time to stock up on back-to-school supplies for your family, including clothing and school supplies like pencils, pens, and paper—up to $100 per item. Books are also eligible for sale tax-free during this period if they’re bought at an Alabama bookstore that has an appropriate vendor certificate.

Arkansas

The Arkansas tax-free weekend is from August 6-7, 2022.

You can purchase clothing, diapers, electronics, school supplies, art supplies, and accessories tax-free during this period.

Connecticut

Connecticut’s tax-free weekend is August 21-22, 2022. Clothing and footwear under $100 are exempt from sales tax during this time.

Florida

Florida is having tax free weekend from July 25th to August 7th, 2022. Clothing, school supplies, and computers are all tax-free during this time.

Illinois

Illinois will begin its tax-free weekend on Aug. 5, 2022.

Iowa

Iowa tax-free weekend is August 5-6, 2022. Clothing, shoes, and certain school supplies are exempt from sales taxes during this time.

Maryland

Maryland’s tax-free weekend is August 14-20, 2022.

Maryland’s tax-free weekend is for clothing and footwear.

Massachusetts

This tax-free weekend will be held on August 13-14, 2022. It includes almost all retail items under $2500.

Mississippi

Mississippi’s tax-free weekend is July 29-30, 2022.

During this time, clothing and footwear with a sales price of $100 or less per item are exempt from state sales tax. Most non-clothing items, including books and school supplies you purchase for elementary or secondary school use, are also exempt from sales tax during the same time period.

Missouri

The tax-free weekend is August 5-9, 2022. Any clothing and footwear under $100 purchased during this time will be exempt from sales tax. School supplies purchased during this period, including backpacks and notebooks up to $50 in value each, will also be exempt from sales tax. In addition, computers priced at $1,500 or less are exempt from sales taxes as well.

New Mexico

New Mexico’s tax-free weekend is August 5-7, 2022.

You can buy clothing, diapers and shoes, computers and software, school supplies, and more without paying sales tax.

Ohio

If you’re an Ohio resident and in the market for a new backpack, pencil case, or other school supplies, consider shopping your state’s tax-free weekend.

The dates for Ohio’s tax-free weekend are August 5-7, 2022. This means that all clothing items under $75 per item (including shoes), diapers, and school supplies will be tax-free throughout those three days.

In addition to clothing and diapers, instructional materials such as books don’t count toward the sales tax cap during this weekend either—so if you want to stock up on some new reading material for yourself or your kids, now is a good time!

Oklahoma

Oklahoma is the perfect spot to get back to school. Oklahoma tax-free weekend is August 5-7, 2022. The state has tax-free clothing. It also offers tax-free diapers and school supplies! Coincidentally, Oklahoma is one of the top five best states to live in fo homeschoolers!

South Carolina

South Carolina’s tax-free weekend is August 5-7, 2022.

South Carolina will have a three-day tax-free weekend. During the three days of this event, clothing, and accessories priced at $100 or less, shoe purchases of $100 or less, school supplies purchased for $20 or less per item, and computer software with a retail price of under $50 will be exempt from sales tax. This also applies to printer paper cartridges that cost up to $30 per cartridge and printer supplies (such as paper and ink) with a retail price under $50 per unit.

Tennessee

Date of the Tennessee tax-free weekend: Saturday, July 29 through Sunday, July 30.

What’s tax-free? Clothing, school supplies, and computer purchases (including cameras and accessories) are exempt from sales taxes. Diapers are also eligible for purchase without paying sales taxes.

Texas

Texas Tax-Free Weekend is August 5-7, 2022. Texas Tax-Free Weekend is for clothing, diapers, footwear, backpacks, school supplies, and other items (up to $100 per item).

Virginia

Virginia Tax-Free Weekend is August 5-7, 2020. The state of Virginia offers a tax-free weekend for clothing, school supplies, diapers, and other items purchased for students back to school.

West Virginia

In the Mountain State, you are able to shop tax-free on clothing and footwear for the entire family, as well as school supplies, diapers, and instructional materials. You can also take advantage of this weekend to stock up on computers, tablets, and other technology items.

You can purchase sports equipment at a discount too! The West Virginia sales tax holiday even extends to certain types of bikes, including those that have been designed exclusively for use by children who have a physical disability. The savings are great if you’re looking to set up your homeschool classroom or sports team with new gear for next year!

Get the Dates for Your State So You Can Prepare for Back-To-School Shopping

The tax-free weekend dates vary from state to state and are subject to change yearly. If you’re looking for a specific date, we recommend checking with your local department of revenue or retail stores for the latest information about back-to-school tax-free shopping dates in your area.

A few states have different tax-free weekends from year to year as well, so it’s important that you make sure you’re using the correct dates when planning your shopping trip.

Shop Prime Day Instead of Tax-Free Weekend

If you are a Prime member, then Amazon Prime Day is the better deal. It will take place from July 12th to 13th, so be sure to snag some deals before heading back to school!

You can avoid the crowds by shopping from your couch. If you don’t have prime or if you don’t have time for that, just wait until the tax-free weekend starts and shop in-store.
