The fourth of July is right around the corner, and we have a list of fun activities for you to do with your family. We guarantee these activities will help create memories that will last for years to come!
1.) Create a Family Scavenger Hunt
You can create a family scavenger hunt. This is great because it gives everyone a chance to participate and allows you to bond with your family by working together. The best scavenger hunts are those that are fun and interesting. They should also be safe. To keep it safe, make sure adults or teens are paired with younger kids, so they don’t get lost.
To keep it fun, make sure the hunt has enough mental challenges as well as physical ones. Add in both indoor activities and outdoor challenges. Finally, make sure there are easy challenges along with hard ones.
You can grab a simple family scavenger hunt for free from our printable library if you are in a time crunch. This scavenger hunt is perfect for the outdoors and designed for younger children.
2.) Have an Outdoor Picnic and Barbecue
Having an outdoor homeschool barbeque with a Blackstone griddle is super fun. Bring a variety of foods. It’s fun to have a spread that includes hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, fruit, and some homemade treats.
Prepare your food ahead of time, so you don’t have to do it while everyone is waiting. If you are grilling, you can easily throw your pre-made patties and preseason meats on the grill.
If it rains, you may want to consider having the picnic indoors or under an overhang or umbrella if possible so you are dry and can enjoy the day even when it rains outside! If you can’t do this, be sure that everyone has appropriate rain gear before heading out into whatever weather conditions come your way during this event.
If it gets too hot, be sure there are plenty of water bottles available for everyone, so they stay hydrated while also taking frequent breaks from being outside in too much direct sunlight. This will help keep everyone’s temperatures from getting too high. It will also help everyone at your homeschool party avoid sunburn or dehydration.
Grab a Blackstone Griddle from Amazon today, or check out the full benefits of a Blackstone griddle for homeschool families.
3.) Make Homemade Ice Pops
Ice pops are a fun way to cool off on a hot summer day. You can make them with juice, milk, yogurt, or even all three! Add fruit for extra flavor and nutritional value.
You can also experiment with different flavors by adding spices such as cinnamon or freshly picked mint leaves.
If you start making them early enough in the season, you can freeze fresh berries from your garden so that each batch of ice pops will be full of fresh goodness from start to finish.
You can grab a silicone ice pop maker tray with the cleaning brush, and sticks, on Amazon. The silicone makes it easy to pop out your frozen treats.
4.) Fly Kites at the Park
The easiest way for kids to fly a kite is with assistance from a parent. First, pick up a kite at your local department store, toy store, or Amazon. Then find a park that has open space for flying it.
Once you’ve selected the perfect spot for your fourth of July activity, you can enjoy an afternoon in the field, eating ice cream and flying kites.
You can grab an awesome yellow and navy butterfly kite from Amazon that your daughter will love. as an added touch, this kite looks like something out of the Jingle Jangle Netflix movie because of the cool gear design.
This awesome kite looks like a stingray flying through the sky. The blue colors go great with the Fourth of July too!
5.) Decorate your Bikes or Scooters with Red, White, and Blue Accessories
You could decorate your bikes for the fourth of July and go for a fun bike ride on the trail. Some decorations you might consider:
- Streamers: Whether decorating a bike or scooter, streamers are a great way to show some patriotic spirit.
- Flag: If you’re looking for something more substantial, attach a flag to the handlebars or place it on top of the front.
- Seat cover: you could get everyone matching seat covers from Amazon.
As an added touch, you could get everyone a set of patriotic LED lights for their bike tires. These lights are battery-powered and last up to 40 hours.
Now that you know how easy it is to make your kids’ bikes look great for July 4th celebrations this weekend, there’s no excuse not to do so!
6.) Roast Marshmallows and Make S’mores
To roast marshmallows, you’ll need a stick for each marshmallow. You can find these at any outdoor store or even in the backyard of your house if you have one. Be sure to clean them up if you go this route. If you don’t have these options, you could get metal campfire sticks from Amazon.
Place the marshmallow near but not touching an open flame from an open fire or a gas grill until lightly browned—about 90 seconds to 2 minutes for medium to dark brown (a little longer for dark). Rotate as needed so that all sides get cooked evenly without burning or sticking too much to stick together before removing from the heat source directly onto graham cracker squares covered with chocolate squares and letting sit until melted (or drizzle caramel sauce on top!)
You could also get this tabletop s’mores kit if you wanted to make smores inside on a rainy day.
7.) Paint a Mural
Painting a mural with your kids is a fun activity you can do inside or outside. This is a great way to celebrate the Fourth of July as it brings all of you together and provides an opportunity to use various materials.
If you paint inside, try using acrylic paints on canvas. If you paint outside, try using water guns with paint on the poster board.
If you want to get creative with this project, you could also splatter paint t-shirts.
Once the mural is completed and dried, hang it up in your home so everyone can enjoy it for years to come!
8.) Make a Fruit Bouquet
This is a fun way to make your fruit pretty, and it’s easy enough that kids can help with the process. You’ll need:
- A clear bowl (or vase) at least 10 inches in diameter
- Kabob sticks
- Fresh strawberries, blueberries, grapes, and cherries. You could also have some melon balls. The berries should be washed and dried before arranging them on the plate. Don’t use any other type of fruit—it won’t look as nice!
- A small bunch of mint leaves for decoration (optional)
Arrange a layer of berries at the bottom of your bowl to look like the “dirt.” Then place fruit in kabob sticks for your flowers. You could even make them into fireworks. Place the kabob sticks down into the bowl. You can stick in mint leaves here and there for added decorations.
9.) Create a Musical Instrument Parade
Make a list of all the instruments you can think of from around your home. You can order some from Amazon if you don’t have any.
Make sure there are enough for everyone in your family!
Dress in red, white, and blue clothing, so everyone looks patriotic.
Play the instruments as you walk through the neighborhood or house, and have fun celebrating America’s birthday!
10.) Have a Family Hike
With this activity, you and your family will enjoy the great outdoors while exercising. Pack a picnic basket with food and drinks to make it even more fun. Bring along a camera to capture the memories! If you’re feeling extra energetic, consider bringing along some snacks for afterward. This is a great way to spend time together as a family and have fun simultaneously!
11.) Dress up in Red, White, and Blue Clothing and Visit Local Historical Sites
Visit local historical sites. This is a great way to learn about the history of your community. You can visit a museum, an old fort, or even just walk through a local park where you might find remnants of earlier generations.
If possible, get yourself (and your kids) involved in some historical reenactments or living history programs. These events allow you to see how our ancestors lived and dressed during certain times in American history—giving you a new perspective on what it means to be an American citizen today!
12.) Play Ball
You can play softball in your backyard or take it to the park. You could kick a soccer ball around with the dogs. Or even play fetch too. The point is that there’s no wrong way to have fun! If you live near a lake, try swimming and then playing ball on dry land. That way, there will be plenty of water nearby if you need to cool off from running around.
13.) Make Patriotic Puppets and Have a Puppet Show
Making a puppet is a fun way to celebrate the Fourth of July. Depending on your time and budget, you can make a simple or elaborate puppet. You can use different materials to make your puppet stand out from others.
Plus, you can also use your imagination in deciding what your puppet will look like and what it will do when you perform with it!
You may want to share a story or teach something while you perform with your puppet on the Fourth of July—this is ideal if an audience is watching you! Your kids will have lots of fun seeing how creative you get with this activity!
