Homeschooling is hard. And with the pandemic and fears of the virus, it’s even more challenging. Every homeschool mom needs some stress relievers built into her day to keep sane. For me, it’s walking around my neighborhood or reading a good book. What are your go-to ways of relaxing during a stressful day? Here are some great stress relievers for homeschool moms for the upcoming 2022 school year.

1.) Turn off the News

The news can be stressful. The information is often negative, biased, and misleading. Most importantly, the news sensationalizes everything to get people to watch and read it. If you are a homeschool mom who struggles with anxiety or depression, the last thing you need is for your favorite source of entertainment to cause stress for you on top of everything else that life brings your way.

The best way to avoid this problem is to simply stop watching the news altogether! 

It may sound extreme at first, but after a few weeks of not listening or reading about how bad things are in this world (and how we’re all doomed), I promise that you’ll feel much better about yourself and your life than ever before. 

2.) Get Outside

It’s hard to feel stressed when you’re enjoying the beauty of nature. Get outside and breathe fresh air, take a walk and exercise your body, or just sit on your porch and watch the trees sway in the breeze. If you live near any kind of park or natural area, take advantage! Look at all of God’s creations around you—the clouds floating by, birds flying overhead, flowers blooming in springtime.

3.) Take a Nap

Naps are a great way to relieve stress and get the mental energy you need for the rest of your day. A short nap can help you stay alert, recover from a stressful situation, and even improve your mental health over time.

  • Watch with your kids. They’ll love it too! Try watching old classics like Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music with them. Or watch their favorite new show together—that way, they’ll feel included in the fun too. That will make them happy, which will make you happy!
  • Watch with your spouse. A night out on the town might not always be feasible given that both parents are busy with schoolwork and other activities throughout the day. If possible, why not spend some time enjoying each other’s company? You could even use Amazon Prime Video and have an evening movie marathon together! 
  • Watch with friends. Friends are great for sharing laughs over common interests—whether it’s watching your favorite rom-com or just enjoying some good food together.

6.) Unplug From Social Media

Social media is a huge source of stress for many people, and it can be particularly stressful for homeschool moms. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can be beneficial to unplug from social media to focus on the essential things in your life. Unplugging will help give you more time for yourself, your family, and even friends!

7.) Read a Good Book

Reading a good book is an excellent stress reliever for homeschool moms. It can be a fiction or nonfiction book about your subject of interest in. Don’t waste time reading books you hate! 

It does not matter what type of book you choose to read. The important thing is that it helps you relax and disconnect from the stressors of everyday life. You can even research book reviewers in your favorite niches to easily find good content to read.

8.) Take Care of Yourself

You are an important part of your family and your homeschooling experience. You need to take time for yourself and not get burned out by constantly worrying about how things are going in the classroom. Here are just a few more bonus stress relievers you can use to take care of yourself:

  • Get up early or stay up late. If you can’t do both, pick one—but do something different from your daily routine. Mixing up your routine can give you a different perspective. 
  • Take a break from it all by watching TV or reading a book for an hour or two.
  • Go for a walk with friends, family members, neighbors… whoever wants to go! It’s essential to have people around you who care about what happens during this stressful phase in life.
  • Get a Self Care Journal. Self-care journals help you keep on track, which can motivate you to continue taking care of yourself. When you can actually “see” the time you are investing and how you are spending it, it doesn’t feel like a waste.

Stress Relievers for Homeschool Moms: Find the Right One For You

While there aren’t fail-proof stress relievers for homeschool moms, here are some steps you can take to start being more mindful of your mental and emotional health. 

First, turn off the news. It’s important to stay informed, but too much exposure to negative media will only worsen things, so try limiting your intake or going cold turkey for a while if needed. Second, get outside! We all know how good fresh air and sunshine feel on our skin – they also do wonders for our mental state! 

If this doesn’t work for you, then perhaps consider taking naps when possible (even just 15 minutes can help) or going for walks around the neighborhood, which doubles up as exercise time plus some much-needed quiet time from kids running around all day long. 

Finally, unplug from social media and read something uplifting, like an inspirational quote book or even your favorite novel!
