We have been doing a lot of summer reading, my daughter has been practicing her reading skills gearing up for kindergarten, and I have been reading her larger books as well. When we read the larger books we partake in snow cones for “snow cone reading time” and it has become and enjoyable part of our daily routine.

We have a great snow cone maker. Over the time that I’ve had it I’ve discovered a few tips and tricks. For instance, I originally was using crushed ice from the fridge and putting it in the maker, in hopes it didn’t wear out. But this didn’t snow the ice, and actually took a very long time. Not to mention the mess. So, this summer I tried just whole ice cubes! It snowed the ice perfectly, and crushed enough for six or more snow cones in less than a couple minutes. It was a breeze. I would definitely recommend this snow cone maker if you are looking into some snow cone reading time! You can get it here on amazon!

Now onto the content…

The Doll House People

This book is right around 300 pages long, and has black and white pictures throughout. One of the main pictures my daughter liked to investigate was the old catalog ad for the dolls and their prices, etc. This book is filled with mystery, but ultimately it is a Happy whimsical little book about friendship, and everything turns out joyful at the end. There’s no strange spins in this book, as it was published over 20 years ago in 2000. It is just a happy, easy read. Great to read to a younger audience. You can grab a copy from Amazon here!

Little town on the prairie:

We jumped right into the middle of the little house series because it was the only book on the shelf. It turned out to be a pretty good one. It is 307 pages long, and had a few black and white pictures scattered throughout. It was nice to read about a little history as it has many historical facts scattered throughout its pages. It also is just relaxing as it talks of a time that was far more simplified than our own. My daughter liked it though many of the portions were very descriptive, like in the scenery, and such things. But she did admit that she enjoyed The Doll People a little more. You can get the little house books on Amazon here!

The Box Car Children

This is a classic series that I read when I was little. It is amusing as it talks about all the children’s antics as they try to survive on their own, in the somewhat, “perfect” conditions they stumble upon at the box car. These are mysteries, so they hold some suspense that has you flipping pages, but they are also light, easy readers. You can grab a copy here!

Pizza Pat

Pizza Pat is by far one of our favorite Dr. Suess books! It is just amusing as it talks all about making pizza, though if you haven’t read it, the ending might surprise you! This isn’t one of the larger chapter books, but it is one that my daughter reads part of and I read part of. We have read our copy multiple times this summer, but you can grab your own copy here!

Fairy Tale Fraud:

The fairy tale fraud series is hilarious to read to kids. SPOILERS AHEAD! It gives a fun spin on a variety of fairy tales. For instance, jack and the beanstalk, not only has the valuable lesson of thinking of other in the end, but has a funny plot twist of the witch being somewhat decent and jacks mom marrying the giant in the end and them moving to the clouds. I won’t give away any of the rest in the series, but they are some amusing tales. You can grab jack and the beanstalk fairy tale fraud here from Amazon!

Silly Birds:

Of course we have to include some easy readers on the list for the kids to read themselves! Where would we be without them. Silly Birds is the lat st publication (at the time of writing this) by M&D Co. (That’s us!) Silly birds is an easy to read book filled with Pre-K and Kindergarten level reading words and the amusing twist of birds that are all sorts of colors and do all sorts of amusing shenanigans! The pages are simple, and have larger don’t, to help the kids along in their reading journey. You can grab a copy of Silly Birds from Amazon here!

I Hate My Bow!

I Hate My Bow is an amusing easy reader. With one or two lines of type per page is is perfect for beginners. The pulse side is, it isn’t just about things this dog hates, in the end, it shows what she loves. It is a great little book about friendship, and of course a cute dog! You can grab a copy of this book off Amazon here!

Now, there are seven fun books (or book series) that you can start reading with the kids today to make this summer both fun and educational!
