For the second semester of kindergarten we have been working more with subtraction. My daughter took to it like a fish in the water, but we had some fun subtraction aids to get us started! So, today we are going to be discussing some of these fun teaching aids that include things like interactive games, cards, and videos. Lets jump in and get started.
Subtraction Game:
Our Main help for subtraction learning has been out interactive subtraction game. With this game the kids are given three choices for the answers to the subtraction problems that they are doing. There is also the option for a hit, which allows them to count up the answers! Here is an example:
Not only is an interactive online game, but it is also set up in a game board fashion which allows the kiddos to go around the game board one through ten. YOU CAN BUY THIS INTERACTIVE GAME HERE FOR $3.25.
Number Blocks Video:
You can also have your kiddos view some of the subtraction number blocks videos to help peak there interest in the topic. You can find them free on you tube, but a good one to get started is this one:
Dry Erase Board Practice:
One of the best ways to perfect a skill is by practice. Practice makes perfect after all. I have found that instead of using plain paper it is more fun for kids to use brightly colored dry erase markers and a board. You can write down subtraction problems in rainbow colors for them to work with. Start with easy problems like subtraction by ones:
- 1-1=0
- 2-1=1
- 3-1=2
- 4-1=3
- 5-1=4
Then work your way up. Repeat the ones subtract for a week, then the twos, then the threes and work on mixing them until the kids catch on. They will eventually get to where they know the problems by heart. Here is an awesome set of dry erase boards on amazon that work great for homeschooling!
Sticks and Flash Cards:
We are also really big on flash cards. We have an awesome addition set with little flaps like a tab book. This set of stick/ number flash cards from amazon is also a great learning too for subtraction from 0 to 10 numbers. The sticks are great for counting and the wooden numbers can be used for the answers to the problems. The cards are also dry erase cards that come with a wipe and maker set. There are so many options for this one!
Thanks for stopping by to check out these awesome subtraction aids for the last half of the kindergarten semester!
Happy Teaching!
