Kids Color Epson Salt Bath Experiment (23 Days Until Christmas)

  •

Welcome back to another science experiment post! We have 23 Days until Christmas! Have your started your December breaks yet? We haven’t, we are still going in full swing with the Christmas carols for music class and Christmas drawings for art! But for this post we have a cute little science project for you today.

This one is specifically for home-schoolers, because it really wouldn’t work out for in school kids (and definitely not for virtual students either). Today I’ll walk you through how we made color changing bath salts and how it was kind of a dud…and why! Because you win some, and you loose some in homeschool!

1.) Grab those supplies!

This one is easy, and I have it prepped here for EASY clean up:

  • Cup of epson salt
  • Two paper bowls
  • Two coloring colors
  • A small amount of water
  • A plastic fork

2.) Mix the color:

For the second step your going to be mixing the color! Squeeze a small amount of food coloring into the water and mix it up. We used red and blue because we were shooting for purple! Mix it with the fork!

3.) Mix the color with the epson salts!

Then pour it into the epson salt bowl and start stiring. For this step you may need to add more epson salts. No more than a half a cup extra is required. You’ll notice a color change here! This s due to some of the additives in our epson salts. Ours were not plain to start with. Keep stiring and they will dry out!

4.) Put them in a bath!

Time to test out your epson salts! Due to our now her light coloring, our epson salts fizzled out QUICK in the bath tub. When they hit the water it changed it to a very light purple for a few seconds and then dissolved out. Ours ended up not being concentrated enough. Some things you could do is use liquid food coloring instead of gels. I just used gels because that’s what was handy, but liquid would work a lot better. Also using plain epson salts, no dented or added ions would work better as well.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today to check out our latest science experiment! Sorry if this one is. Bit of a dud for you!
