One of the units we did with abeka was through skills development for K5 was a unite on magnets! So far they haven’t had very many science based lessons…though they had one with dropping balls and gravity. But this magnets lesson was so much fun today! We continued after the lesson to explore more magnetic objects!
Making Magnetic Paperclip Designs…
Yea, I know not my most educational school activity but my daughter had a lot of fun with this one. It worked for a nice creative thinking project I suppose and it helped to make school fun!
But as you can see from the photo we really did test out a lot of items to see if they were magnetic or not. We had:
- Mini pumpkins
- Paper clips
- A lock (random metal object lol)
- Buttons
- Bouncy ball
My daughter pretty much knew ahead of time which objects would be magnetic and which wouldn’t be. But she still had a blast with this. There are also tons and tons of amazon magnetic experiments that you can do if you don’t want to come put with your own supplies. This one (here) is really neat on amazon, or I will link some cool ones below too. Instead of a random magnet from around the house you could also grab a magnetic wand! With an unlimited education budget you could really have some crazy stuff.
Are coins magnetic?
We did a fun little bonus activity testing the magnetism of coins. My daughter tested dimes, buckles, pennies, and quarters. Not only did this help with coin recognition (for the math unit) but it also helped with critical thinking by making an hypothesis before hand and testing it out. My daughter thought they would be becoming they were metal. But coins aren’t magnetic.
